Before the Afternoon of the 7th Grade Dance, No One even Dreamed that Tomboy Tess had No Legs. Pencil on paper. 7 by 9 ½. 2003. From a photo by Sally Mann. My Tess isn't much like the photo, in which the subject (Sally's daughter?) did have legs—both.

Years ago I worked with a young woman who always wore slacks to the office. One morning she arrived in a dress. Someone made a joke about having all along supposed she hadn't any legs. It seemed funny at the time so I remember.
