Girl Blowing Confetti. Pencil and colored pencil on paper. 6 ¾ by 9 ½. 2002. From a photo in The San Francisco Chronicle.
The newspaper photo was a full page but very fuzzy ad for Macy's. Actually she was blowing a mess of tiny stars because Macy's uses a star instead of an apostrophe in its "logo."
A true logotype is an identifying design made from combined letter shapes. An idea that probably developed out of ligatures (Æ, Œ, etc). What we now (even Webster's) call "logos" are often really trademarks. I watch for opportunities to tax people with such trivia. But they seldom arise and, while you really can't force such things without being thought pretty nutty, it would be a shame to miss this opportunity.
