Rosie in Parts but Properly Pantied #3. Pencil and colored pencil on paper. 9 by 6. 2002. From a photograph, "Rosie" by Robert Mapplethorpe.
Mapplethorpe's Rosie, who is not pantied at all, is a very compelling photo. She, like many of his images, provoked fierce moral outrage. Particularly in Cincinnati. My Rosie has not caused any fuss anywhere. Her first two versions (neither of which included the gray shape—which shape has something to do with the concrete park bench Rosie sat upon in the photo), were bought by visitors to City Art gallery in San Francisco.
